Feature Student: Jennifer Swenson

Jennifer Swenson has rapidly progressed from an inexperienced amateur to an accomplished photographer, specializing in maternity images and children from infant to teens. Her creative style is powerful and dynamic, but never competes for attention with her subjects, whose unique beauty and personality radiate from every image. You can see more of her amazing work at: jenniferswensonphotography.com

What Jenn says about Dwight at Photek: "Dwight is an extremely knowledgeable instructor in all aspects of photography from image capture to fine-tuning in Photoshop. He is willing to share all of his knowledge and is extremely patient—willing to take the time to make sure you understand.”

More of what Jenn says about Dwight: “When I started learning from Dwight I had very little knowledge about how to work my camera. With Dwight's encouragement I was able to take my camera off of auto and capture the images that I had envisioned. His classes started me on journey in photography that I only dreamed possible! Thank you Dwight!"

Feature Student: Mike Wanini

Now that Mike has established a solid foundation of camera skills, he's set his sights on always aiming higher--continuing to hone his field skills and creative vision. In that elusive quest for perfect images he looks forwards to many more journeys back to his native Kenya, and has set an objective of showcasing his work created there in his own wildlife and nature book.

What Mike says about Photek:

What I really enjoy about Photek classes is the passion that Dwight has for what he does, plus the ability to transfer that passion to his students. Dwight has inspired me to aim higher in my creative ability!

Feature Student: Lisa Healing

While Lisa's favourite style has been black and white studio work she has plans in the works for exploring more outdoor natural-light work in the near future. If you would like to book a session with her you can contact her at: lisahealingphotography@gmail.com

What Lisa says about Photek: "When I arrived at my first course taught by Dwight I never imagined how the knowledge he was about to give me would change my life. Dwight taught me the fundamentals of photography and gave me the understanding and confidence to continue to develop my skills and pursue my passion of portrait photography."

Feature Student: Paul Howard

After a 20 year “rest”, Paul Howard decided to pursue photography again in earnest in 2008. He loves to “just get out and explore creative possibilities”, both behind the camera and in Photoshop. You can see more of his work at www.howardpa.zenfolio.com and through www.twitter.com/paulhoward86.

What Paul says about Photek

"Dwight's classes at Photek are thoroughly enjoyable, very informative, and certainly give you the spark to grab your camera or pull up an image in Photoshop and try new things! For anyone wanting to learn more about photography, from basic camera operation to image editing, I’d recommend Photek training in an instant."

Feature Student: Mike Wanini

While still in his homeland of Kenya, Mike Wanini really enjoyed photographing it's vast array of creatures and majestic vistas, but lacked the skills that would allow him to excel. "I was just a happy snapper. I enjoyed taking photos, but without any knowledge of composition, light or anything technical." Since his arrival in Canada, however, he has grown immensely in his abilities. He got a chance to put his talent to the test on a recent trip back home to Kenya--a test he passed with flying colors based on the images you see here.

What Mike Says About Photek:

"Before taking classes at Photek I didn't know how to operate my camera except on auto mode! I was actually pretty happy with my photos, but when I came to your classes it was life changing for me to see flawless images and learn how they are created, while getting a chance to know the person who took them! In a nutshell I became a better photographer after attending your courses."

Dwight taught me the fundamentals of photography and gave me the understanding and confidence to continue to develop my skills and pursue my passion of portrait photography."

Feature Student: Brian Olstad

BrianA graphic designer by trade, Brian has worked with Dwight for years. Photography both compliments his daily creativity, and awakened a passion for "the moment", a quest to "see light", and to have a photo published in a climbing magazine. Brian's images rarely get posted online, but Redpoint Design has an extensive graphic portfolio.

What Brian says about Photek: "Dwight has taught me patience, when to wait, when to hurry, and when to plan. Within this, I have also learned to read the light that is around me, and to make creative decisions based on what I see and feel in any given situation. Dwight also taught me that I never want to take photos of tigers."

Feature Student: Archie Richardson

Archie Richardson has always been interested in photography, but drifted away from it for 15 years—having never fully mastered the challenges film presented. With the arrival of affordable digital cameras, he was drawn back in. “I found that the instant feedback I got from digital photography allowed me to learn from my mistakes more readily and I became more satisfied with my images. But this was only getting me so far. I needed help, so I enrolled in a number of photography courses, and since then my photography has really improved.”

Even more of what Archie says about Photek:

Dwight is a passionate photographer and instructor. He communicates in a manner that is easy to understand, and reinforces what he teaches by the use of some very good examples: his own photographs. My own images are now much improved because of the time I’ve spent with him. I also appreciate the format of his classes: they’re small and personal so I’ve also learned a lot from the interaction with other students. It’s this kind of atmosphere that Dwight encourages in every class I’ve taken. I’ve recommended Dwight’s courses to other photographers I know and I’ll continue to do so!

Feature Student: Lisa Healing

Eight years ago, when Lisa first ventured into photography, she knew where she wanted to go: to capture beautiful images of children and babies, and by that measure she has succeeded admirably. Her sensitive approach and clear love of her little subjects shines through in every image she creates.

Dwight taught me the fundamentals of photography and gave me the understanding and confidence to continue to develop my skills and pursue my passion of portrait photography."

Feature Student: Archie Richardson

We all tend to create images of what we have a passion for, and Archie is no exception, with much of his work capturing the magic of the places he travels to, including his own 'backyard': the foothills and mountains west of his home in Rocky Mountain House. I like most forms of photography, but I guess I’m really drawn to landscape and nature photography. I do also like taking photos of family, sporting events, air shows, fire engines and buildings.”

More of what Archie says about Photek:

“Early on I assumed I was taking some pretty good images, but when I really started to study and critique them I realized that many of them were boring—they mostly looked the same. Nothing wrong as snapshots, but I wanted to be able shoot more than snapshots! Dwight has really helped with this through his classes. I thought the camera could see as I see but now I realize that this just isn’t how it works! Dwight has the ability to help his students realize and understand the limitation of the camera and he teaches the skills and techniques that are absolutely vital to the making of an interesting and visually pleasing picture.”

What Paul says about Photek: "Dwight has a very evident passion and extensive knowledge about photography and conveys this in a very easygoing manner to his students. You can read all the books in the world, but Dwight’s ability to show you the answer in Photoshop, explain a process with an anecdote, or pull one of his own photos to illustrate what he means can’t be beat."

Andrea has known from the beginning what she wanted to accomplish in photography: to create compelling portraits, and she has taken huge strides towards that objective in the last year. She loves the control of mood and mystique possible in the studio but also enjoys capitalizing on the unique locations and light of outdoor locations. You can see more of Andrea's work at www.ambrophoto.ca.

What Andrea says about Photek:

“I have taken most of Dwight’s courses. I was just a beginner, with very little knowledge about cameras and photography, so I started with the introductory course and learned so much about my camera and all the different functions and settings. It is amazing how once you gain this knowledge how much it will improve your photographs! If you don’t understand the basics, the camera’s manual can only get you so far. The first course I took from Dwight dispelled the mysteries and complexities of my camera which allowed me to think more about what I wanted to photograph rather than think just about the camera. Dwight’s instruction helped me learn the technical aspects of photography and the camera so I could concentrate more on the subject and what I wanted to communicate to those looking at my photos."
